About Us

John Archer takes its name from the fifth great grandfather of one of the brand’s co-founders. 

One historian described Archer in these words:

“John Archer was of medium size, of great bodily strength, had a large share of moral and physical courage. His mind was of the combative order, never quitting nor yet ever declining controversy... In his portraits, his [physiognomy] is remarkably stern."

Family lore holds that to balance out his “stern” appearance and accentuate his physical strength, Archer spent much time with his tailor, particularly as a young man. 

The John Archer brand is inspired by its namesake’s trailblazing story and his desire to “cut a fine jib”.

Archer first attended Princeton University with an eye to becoming a theologian and preacher, but a throat affliction would have made preaching difficult and got Archer interested in the field of medicine.  He went on to graduate in the very first class from what became the University of Pennsylvania medical school.  Given his last name began with an A, Archer was the first student to receive his degree at graduation, making him the first medical graduate in the United States.
